October means it’s time for Canstruction Boston!
Canstruction Boston is dedicated to raising food and funds to help people experiencing food insecurity in Massachusetts … and Nitsch is committed to doing our part to design and build a structure completely out of cans that entertains the public while raising awareness about the issue of hunger. At the end of the event, all cans will be donated to the Merrimack Valley Food Bank!
This year, Canstruction Boston asked participating teams to “Celebrate New England” in their design. The Nitsch team decided to design and build A BeaCAN of Nourishment: a lighthouse and keeper’s house sitting on a rocky ledge surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. If you look closely, you can even spot a whale!
Of the 2,600-can structure, our team noted, “On the darkest nights and in the worst weather at sea, a lighthouse provides a beacon of hope to those seeking land. So too does Canstruction provide a beacon of hope for people who are experiencing food insecurity – this event clearly shows that people working together to fight hunger can make a difference! This playful homage to the New England coastline is made of healthy foods that include critical proteins (tuna and salmon, beans, and peanut butter) and vegetables (green beans and corn).”
Check out the time-lapse video of our build:
Chris Hodney, PE, a Project Manager in our Civil Engineering department who has participated in many past Canstruction Boston events, told the BSA, “Canstruction is my favorite event that we do at Nitsch. There’s so much energy and excitement in the room on build day, and it’s fun seeing the creative designs that other teams are building.”
You can see all of this year’s structures in the official Canstruction Boston Facebook album. If you like the photo of our structure before noon on Wednesday, November 1st, it counts as a vote for Nitsch to win the People’s Choice award!
Structures will be on display in the lobbies of 280 and 290 Congress Street, Boston through Friday, November 10th – don’t miss the chance to go see them in person!
