John Carty, PE, LEED AP

Managing Director, Richmond

What do you love most about your job?

“Initially, solving problems. Even as a kid, I was always into puzzles. Every site design has a complex aspect that has to be solved, and I love a challenge! As I’ve grown in my career though, it’s the relationships that have meant the most to me. When you reach the point when both you and your client are invested in the success of each other, you can truly do great things.”

What drew you to working in civil engineering?

“Growing up in southwest Virginia, there wasn’t much to do. As a result, I spent a lot of time in the woods. My connection to nature is what drove me to be a civil engineer. Shaping the land to create something new, building new communities, and finding a sustainable way to achieve it allows to me to keep that connection to nature alive.”

What are you passionate about outside of work?

“Helping others. I’m invested in the future of Richmond, and that goes beyond just my job. As such, I’ve volunteered my time with Historic Richmond, Richmond Housing Authority, and the James River Park System. I’ve also mentored Virginia Tech students for the last five years through the Land Development Design Industry program. I also serve as the Membership Chair for the Association for Medical Facility Professionals of Virginia and Hebrew Cemetery Chair for Congregation Beth Ahabah.”
