The redevelopment of the historic, one-acre park located in the heart of downtown Northampton provides natural green space, recreation areas, and walkways enjoyed by the community.
Nitsch provided civil engineering services for the design of utilities and stormwater management features. In collaboration with the landscape architect, we designed low impact development stormwater techniques that feature a curb break in the adjacent roadway (Main Street) that allows stormwater from the street to flow through the park. The stormwater enters the water quality swale which filters the stormwater to promote water quality and water quantity mitigations for the proposed condition. The water quality swale flows through the center of the park which helps to highlight the importance of natural drainage features for stormwater treatment and conveyance. The park improvements provide increased green space with native plantings that help to reduce impervious surfaces and heat island effect.
