The Barnstable Municipal Airport, with financial support from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), proposed to reconstruct the existing terminal to provide better service and more capacity to its passengers, install a new access roadway to bypass the congested Route 132, and limit access on the congested Hyannis Rotary. The goal was to improve access/egress and safety to the Airport users and adjacent area.
Nitsch performed boundary retracement and topographic surveys for over 56 acres of land, prepared base plans, prepared roadway and parking layout, and determined easements and property takings to support the project designs.
We provided traffic data collection at approximately 15 locations, conducted area-wide capacity analysis, and completed the Cape Cod Commission Driver Risk Inventory (DRI) report. Nitsch prepared a revised DRI and various analysis scenarios; prepared construction documents for the intersection of Airport Road and Attucks Lane; provided peer review for the design of Access Road and assisted in establishing design parameters; prepared concept designs for a 750-space remote parking lot; and researched alternative pavement materials that are environmentally friendly and sustainable. Nitsch also attended various meetings with the Cape Cod Commission, the Airport Commission, the Town of Barnstable Public Works and Town Council, and the design team.
